General Health - Sore Throats
Most sore throats are caused by a viral infection which antibiotics cannot cure and will normally get better within four or five days.
Simple measures such as gargling every four hours with soluble aspirin or paracetamol, or sucking anaesthetic lozenges will ease the discomfort whilst the infection clears on its own. Do not give aspirin to children under 16 years.
